Questions to ask an Artist
There is a myth that making art is fun and easy. Not True. But Enthusiasm plays a big role in enjoying what you do.

Decision making is serious business. Alone in the studio, immersed with inner thoughts; making art can be uncomfortable, challenging, exhausting and frightening. These are the conversations that aren't said out loud; but every artist knows what I'm talking about.
How can you move forward into a more positive position; try something new - a new medium, a new subject matter. Do it just for you! Not for exhibition not for social media.

Creativity is built on previous thought, and past accomplishments.
Many artist including myself; enjoy developing a series of paintings. One painting inspires another painting. So how do I answer the question 'how long did it take to paint that painting'. Clever artists like Robert Genn, has said 'a life time'.

Original art is from the heart and soul of an artist. So if you see an artist working and if they turn their head to you and offer you an opportunity to get to know them, here are some questions you might ask to learn more about their art and the artist.
1. Do you have a favorite part of the painting?
This could refer to the actual painting or the stages an artist goes through to prepare or create the artwork
2. What inspires your creativity? Creativity as a whole is more than painting from a photograph. Many artist paint from their imagination; using information they have gathered from plein air painting or studying shapes and objects. Creating artwork is a very personal choice.
3. What is the most relevant part of the painting. Especially if it an abstract. Understanding abstract art requires knowledge, history and depth.
4. Do you dream of the artwork while your working on it? (you'll be surprised how many say 'yes'!)
5. Are you painting with a color theory in mind? It helps to view the artwork with a level of understanding of color, and design.
6. Have you painted similar subjects?
7. What was the first painting?
8. What time of day do you like to paint?
I hope this helps you find a way to learn more about the life of an artist. Each artist skill level is different; between years of experience, the type of art, and the level of dedication they have applied to learning their art. Creativity comes in many forms; from imaginative and inventive to inspired it is always original. Each form of painting has a place in our lives. Sharing our creativity is sharing who we are as a person, a country, a culture.
