A Mexican Minute
A Mexican Minute
The Location ~
Recently I had the opportunity to travel and paint a commission for a client. I was so excited to spend some time in San Jose del Cabo and get to know the landscape, experience the culture.
The Inspirations ~
Creating a piece of original artwork is not just about laying down color on a canvas; Its about finding the best way to express the mood of the subject. The rhythm. The shapes and texture, a viewpoint, a light source, and what personal qualities to introduce that will identify the painting clearly and uniquely as an original. 'A Mexican Minute' had to have color and texture as a dominant element in the composition as I knew the Condo owners appreciated artwork that had these qualities. Walking the streets of the Art District and taking photos was the beginning of the development of the painting. The real freedom to create came from being able to work from memory. As I remembered small details I would return to the area or search through photos to capture the essence of what I felt would enhance the painting. The cobble stone streets seemed fitting, the colors of the sunrise, the flowers that grow and spread their color on walls and buildings every where, the people moving about, the quiet mornings, the open skies, are all reflected in the painting.
The client email me when they returned to Mexico and saw the artwork ~ I titled it 'A Mexican Minute'. ''The painting is amazing! You really captured the essence of San Jose. The colours and buildings are so real. Jim and I both want to thank you, can't wait to hang it up tomorrow..."
