A look at Art created for the Calgary Stampede

Preparing for the Calgary Stampede Exhibition each year begins in November ~ so much time is spent thinking about how I want to represent Calgary during this International Event.  Last fall we had perfect weather for hiking; so every Monday, my friends and I would hike for the day.  We visited so many beautiful places and I feel so fortunate to have such beautiful Parks to inspire my art.

Each painting is a new adventure, preparing sometimes takes longer than painting! The vision is a process. Starting a painting without a clear vision could be a dangerous waste of time.  Part of the process is considering color theory, composition, focus, depth, perception.  Each one of these must match the other! Understanding how each of these components equates to a decision is how the vision is developed.  Once those decisions have been made I'm ready to stand in front of the canvas. I might sketch, make notes or testing colors/glazes as I begin.  I like to paint for about 3-4 hours at a time. The hours fly by... Each day I work on a painting is an opportunity to reaffirm my original idea or make changes.  This is where it could lead to a dangerous waste of time.  Usually I refer to the details I've committed to my sketchbook to ensure I stay on task.  The interesting thing about creating artwork; is you may never really know when your done.  Especially if your objective is not realism; which mine never is.  I enjoy the creative side of painting; watching, playing, developing and getting carried away by the small details that become part of the bigger picture. Once I think I'm close to being finished my art is usually placed on the walls of my home.  It does make a difference to see it on a wall compared to an easel in the studio.  Framing a piece can also present a difference.  I'm always excited about my latest piece.  I love the process.  It's really NOT about the finish.  Every Artist is different. Every Painting is Original.
